Engine noises need to be defined in order to further assist in what is making noise in your drive trane. is the engine producing a ticking sound, knocking sound, squealing sound or hissing sound? if an older vehicle is it popping back through the carburetor? Lets take a look into some of these items and get you started on your troubleshooting.I will start with a hissing or suction sound.open the hood and first check for anti freeze escaping through an overflow tank heater hoses either supply or return if automatic trans equipped on the drivers side of the radiator check the transmission line fittings where they attach to the radiator is there any fluid present? if fluid is present lets determine the fluid by coloring. auto transmission fluid is read where anti freeze is of a green and perhaps in gm cars an orange coloring.if you find red fluid check transmission lines for proper tightness at the radiator using a FLARE WRENCH ONLY do not over tighten these strip easily. OK so you checked and your trans lines are tight there are still two more possibilities here folks lets take a quick look into these. first locate your power steering pump at the base of the pump there are two hoses take your hands and trace one hose at a time for any fresh fluid leaks if you find red oil on one or both of the hoses they will more then likely need to be replaced it is possible that the fittings have worked loose check CAREFULLY WITH A FLARE WRENCH have you checked both power steering pump and trans lines yet still have red oil well not to break your heart or ruin your day you need to determine if your car is equipped with a power steering rack as these have been known to crack and go out on front wheel drive cars. to check for damage on a front wheel drive car you will need to put your car up on jack stands on the front and pull the front wheels to inspect the rack for damage. if you find your crack, have replaced or replace and immediately schedule a front end alignment. I want to add here that if any leaks are suspected you can pick up cans of brake cleaner at a local parts house to clean the suspect areas as it dissolves grime and quickly evaporates leaving a clean area to inspect with.
